Nikoi Island
8 Sep 2025 - 13 Sep 2025
The camps offered by Into The Wild aim to train up a squad of little heroes capable of responding to wilderness emergencies. They were created for kids who climb and fall out of trees, ride their bikes too fast, lean too far over to see what's in the pond, have to touch everything and believe a swing is a rocket ship bound for Mars. You know the kids we're talking about, and they seem to love Nikoi. Expect your youngsters to come home more knowledgeable, dirty, (fake) bloody, and happy. DUE TO HIGH DEMAND, TWO CAMPS WILL TAKE PLACE DURING THE SEPTEMBER SCHOOL HOLIDAYS: Camp 1: 8th - 10th September 2025 Camp 2: 11th - 13th September 2025 In this two and a half day camp, kids will learn essential survival skills and how to thrive while being stuck on a desert island. Leadership and teamwork are key themes, helping them manage the stresses of a castaway life and keep their pals safe. Meanwhile, mum and dad can kick back and enjoy luxury island living - no survival skills required for the grown-ups! Special rates for families with kids enrolled in the camp: - Come for 2 night camp and enjoy 20% off accommodation - Extend an extra night and and one night accommodation is on us For bookings or more information drop us an email at [email protected]. 1 Sep 2025 - 15 Oct 2025
Artists-in-Residence Residency Period: 1 September – 15 October, 2025 Tangmo and Mahom "We met in 2021 while traveling in a Karen hill tribe homestay called Ker Lee Glow. Since the end of March 2024, we have been traveling together and sharing this journey through life. We consider ourselves experience designers, creating meaningful events and overnight experiences across Thailand. Each experience is inspired by the people we meet, the places we visit, and the stories we encounter. Every experience is unique because every person and place has its own distinct qualities. We also provide customised experiences shaped by what people truly desire. Traveling is not just a pastime for us; it’s the way we live and learn. Through our journey, we have discovered that we can serve as a bridge—connecting people to one another and to nature. We believe in letting things unfold naturally through the activities we design, creating space for connection and reflection. Over the past year, we have spent most of our time in northern Thailand, particularly enjoying our stays with hill tribe families. We have learned from their simple way of life, which exists in harmony with nature. This experience has beautifully and humbly shifted our perspective on life." Tangmo (Pawinee Kaewprathom) Tangmo is a Thai artist whose work blends community connection, ecological awareness and quiet storytelling. Raised in a farming family on Thailand’s eastern coast, she studied Art Education and worked across the country in responsible tourism and community development. Her time with schools, elephant centres and hill-tribe communities, especially the Karen people, shaped her deep respect for nature and ancestral knowledge. In 2019, she left the corporate world to explore these themes through art. During the pandemic, she supported elephant welfare and local mahouts while developing PRATABJAI, a painting project rooted in memory, emotion and collaboration. Her work is soft and impressionistic, using natural pigments and recycled materials, often shared through DIY sets and workshops. Alongside her art, Tangmo continues to host creative sessions in rural and coastal communities, using painting as a gentle tool for reflection and connection. Whether working alone or with others, her practice invites people to slow down, notice more and care a little deeper. Nakrapas Mahom Nakrapas Mahom is a Bangkok-born artist and facilitator whose work centres on emotional openness, communal reflection and the beauty of living simply. After years of solo travel across Thailand, including a surprising stint selling shrimp medicine, she found herself drawn to the slower rhythms of rural life. Time spent harvesting rice with the Karen community in Chiang Mai helped shape her understanding of care, belonging and stillness. In 2023, she launched Peace Addict Lv.3, a three-day forest retreat focused on reconnecting with nature and local food. That same year, she created ThruToThought_Bar, a gentle space where strangers meet to talk, reflect and share. With themes drawn from everyday life, it offers quiet moments of connection, often over a drink or snack. Mahom’s work creates room for presence. She believes healing often begins not with answers, but with being heard. What is Ubah Rumah? Ubah Rumah, which means ‘Home of Change’, was inspired by the nomadic culture of the indigenous Orang Laut community and the maritime history of the region- both of which are relatively undocumented. The program commenced in November 2022 and, since then, an artist and two researchers have completed residency periods on Nikoi Island. During these periods, they developed their own projects, conducted workshops with guests, engaged staff and visited local communities on Bintan to discover more about the local history and culture. 20 Jun 2025 - 31 Jul 2025
Artist-in-Residence Residency Period: 20 June - 31 July, 2025 Made Bayak Made Bayak is a Balinese artist whose work speaks just as loudly as his values. Based in Banjar Wangbung, he blends community action with creative practice, turning plastic waste into powerful art through his long-running PLASTICOLOGY project. What began in 2010 as an experiment with Bali’s ever-growing piles of plastic has grown into a full-blown movement. Bayak now runs workshops, exhibitions and talks for schools and communities, often self-funded, across Indonesia and beyond. Raised in a family of Balinese manuscript readers and Rajah artists, his work is deeply rooted in local culture. But it doesn’t shy away from tough topics like pollution and youth empowerment. He is also part of Sanggar Anak Tanguh, a Sunday morning art collective helping kids tap into their creativity. And when he’s not painting, he plays guitar in his hardcore band AMPLITHERAPY, using music as another way to engage young people in conversations that matter. Bayak has exhibited internationally, from the USA to Switzerland, and was a finalist for the Sovereign Art Prize in Singapore. But his focus has always been on using art not just to reflect the world, but to change it. Residency Outcomes During his residency on Nikoi Island, Bayak plans to explore how waste, especially plastic, is managed both on the island and in the surrounding communities on Bintan. He is curious about how local beliefs, traditions, and small-scale systems influence waste practices. He will lead workshops and presentations with high school students and the Nikoi team, aiming to exchange ideas and approaches that could also benefit his community back in Bali. He is also keen to spend time in the forests and landscapes of Nikoi, learning about the island’s native plants and the efforts to protect them. Bayak hopes to involve both island staff and guests in creative activities, and to work closely with the local Bintan community. For him, the Ubah Rumah residency is not just about making art — it’s a space to connect, reflect, and imagine new ways forward for people and the planet. What is Ubah Rumah? Ubah Rumah, which means ‘Home of Change’, was inspired by the nomadic culture of the indigenous Orang Laut community and the maritime history of the region- both of which are relatively undocumented. He’s also the long-time host of a Sunday radio show, a local legend for his barefoot 100km birthday walk, and the face of Dumaguete’s beloved ligiron cart races. His motto, Lipay ang Kalibutan (“The world is happy”), says it all. This April we are welcoming back Penny Williams, a self-proclaimed 'Culinary Sorceress, Chef and Adventurer', and a dear friend of ours. Penny has been advising our culinary team for years, helping fine-tune our recipes and spruce up our menus. This visit, she'll be opening the kitchen to our guests with two unique experiences for you to partake in. About PENNY Penny Williams is the owner and Executive Chef of Bali Asli Restaurant and a dear friend of Nikoi and Cempedak Islands. While traveling through Asia in the 1990s, Penny discovered a 'taste' for the local cuisine. She went on to pursue an impressive career that included an apprenticeship at the Savoy and roles in some of Sydney's cutting-edge restaurants such as Restaurant 41, Boathouse at Black Wattle Bay, and Bather’s Pavilion. Her journey then took her back to Asia when she accepted a three-year posting as Executive Chef at the Alila Manggis hotel in Candidasa, Bali. Here, she fell in love with the amazing freshness and vitality of the produce available at her doorstep and the way the Balinese work with it to create a unique tapestry of flavors. She founded Bali Asli in 2011 a restaurant and culinary school in East Bali that promotes Balinese cuisine and culture without exploiting it or its people. Over the years, Penny has traveled regularly from her award-winning restaurant in Bali to spend time with Dika and his team, crafting new recipes and experimenting with different flavor combinations to add to the menu. PENNY on CEMPEDAK While she's on Cempedak Island, Penny will host two exclusive events which you can get involved in: Sun-Downer Cocktail Workshop 5th April 2025 Unwind with Chef Penny and the team at the Dodo Bar, where you’ll craft your own signature drink using local tropical ingredients and artisanal spirits. At the same time, “Meet the Chef” and chat to Penny about her island journey, and how she saw Cempedak materialise into what it is now is. Sip your creation from the best spot on the island to watch the sun set. Indonesian Cooking Class 6th April 2025 Using local ingredients and traditional cooking techniques, Penny will guide you through some of the dishes she and the team have developed on the island over the years. After the hard work is done, sit back and enjoy your work with lunch made by... you! If you are visiting Cempedak during Penny's stay, send us an email in advance to book in for the activities.
